Light Brings Life

Have you ever walked outside on a beautiful sunny day and been surprised by the intensity of the sun's brightness? You quickly lower your head and shade your eyes with one hand while struggling to put on sunglasses with the other. In that moment, the light reveals more than we are able to process, more than we can focus on, and our first response is to look away, or cover our eyes.  John 3:19 says, “The light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.”  If Jesus is the light of the world, do people turn away, or disregard His message because they prefer darkness?

Growing up in New Jersey in the 60’s and 70’s, I have vivid memories of countless snowy days in the winter. Some days the sun would create a bright white light reflecting off the snow that was blinding at times. In like manner, John 3:19 tells us that when Jesus' light came into the world many choose to escape to the darkness. However, it’s not the light that bothers us, it’s what the light reveals that causes us to cover our eyes and run back into darkness. The Light of the world exposes and reveals the things we prefer to keep hidden. So we turn away from the one true source of life, and continue to walk in the shadows of life.

If you've never committed to following Jesus, trust Him today. Jesus said, “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” In my life I’ve walked in both darkness and light. There simply is no comparison. Allow the light of the world to reveal the things we keep hidden, the hurts, the shame, the wounds and brokenness. Allow Jesus to remove the darkness and replace it with His light. Allow Him to bring healing, restoration, and transformation. He came so that we would have life, and have it abundantly. In Him there is life.
